Not every dark water mark on the wood means you need brand-new decking. Our rule is simple: we test the actual strength of the wood before recommending you spend money replacing it. If it holds nails securely and supports weight, we leave it alone. If it is rotten or crumbling, we fix it so your new shingles do not blow away.
If the wood has dark rings from an old, dried-up leak but the timber is solid and passes our probe test, we leave it in place. There is no reason to charge you for wood that is completely structurally sound.
When wood rot is limited to a small area around a pipe boot or valley, we do not tear off the whole roof deck. We cut out the soft section cleanly back to the center of the rafters, add solid 2x4 framing support underneath, and nail in a fresh patch matched to your roof's exact thickness.
When boards are flaking apart and nails pull out by hand, the wood has lost its grip. We pull up the full 4x8 sheet and install a fresh panel so every shingle nail bites tight.
If your home has original 1x6 pine boards that have shrunk and left wide gaps, nails will punch through open air. We screw new plywood sheets directly over the old planks to give your new roof a solid, code-compliant base.
If the framing beams under the wood are split or bowing, replacing the plywood alone will not solve the dip. We sister the framing by bolting heavy new 2x6 or 2x8 lumber alongside the damaged rafter to level the roofline back out before new decking goes down.
